Short answer: “penny auction” sites are scams – usually, if not always. People have lost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST THOSE.

So better stick with regular auction sites, there is a new one called igaddadeal.com. Friends of mine have been testers on it and that’s why I know it’s legit. They accept preregistration right now and you receive free shipping for one month from the time you sign in. From what I understand, igaddadeal.com is even safer to use than any of the other major auction sites. You can read about why that is on their site.

Here is a long explanation of why “penny auctions” are usually/always scams:

1. They pray on people’s greed. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but that’s the truth. You go to the site and see all kind of items you’d love to have, and they are currently only a few cent or maybe a few dollars, where in stores you usually pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. I was curious too the first time I heard about them, I thought “Hey, what a steal!”. But I stick with “if it seems to be too good to be true, then that’s how it is and it’s a scam”. So I did some searching and people who have fallen for the trap to use those “penny auction” sites have been complaining non-stop.

2. The first trouble can start already when signing up. There, they might charge you over $ 200 as soon as you enter credit card information, which you are required at sign-up or after log-in. People have been complaining about that but no single law has been passed for “penny auction” sites, so you won’t get your money back. They also do not provide a phone number or business address, some provide “live chat” but you just get the usual nonsense response.

3. But you won’t notice that $ 200 or more charge immediately, because sometimes they delay that charge so you won’t notice the scam and so they get even more money out of you. Because then you start “bidding” – so it seems. But you won’t win any auctions. And in the rare event that you do, then you would have by then wasted hours of your time, if not days. And some of those auctions will end with an amount higher than what it would cost if bought in stores or any regular shopping site. Because you will also be charged a very high shipping rate.

4. And then there is the issue with receiving the item. Let’s say you “won” an auction. Then the waiting begins for it to arrive. But it won’t. Or as somebody had complained about, all they received were empty boxes. But you can also read where others say “oh yes they have received this and that”. Those are fake statements created by those running “penny auction” sites.

5. Also, when you bid on an item, you usually do not bid against humans, but against “bots”, which is the site itself. Those “bots” is code that runs on the server that manages the site. And it makes sure you won’t win an auction so the owners of the site would make a loss.
